How’s Married Life?

Well, since I said ‘I do’, this is the one question I’ve had to deal with every single day, and not just from one person, but from almost, no, actually everyone I interact with, and that’s many people. It’s the new ‘how’re you doing?” for this new phase of life. It makes you want to devise an answer that’s just as good as “I’m fine” to get it out-of-the-way.

No, I’m not complaining. It’s a good question, and a genuine concern I suppose. It’s an even better conversation starter or filler, because what do you tell the newlyweds after congratulating them on their nuptials? Your guess is only just as right as mine, bam! There goes, “…and how’s married life?” My only worry is how do people expect you to respond to it? At first, I used to say it’s manageable, it sounded neutral and well, politically correct, and it really is manageable. Until I figured I’m underselling this spectacular experience. It’s beautiful, it’s amazing, it’s (anything that would make it sound like it’s the most spectacular experience, because it is). It’s actually what you both want it to be or what you both make it.

But let’s be real now, it’s also a lot of things that can’t be described one month in or even in one sentence, leave alone two or three words. It’s pretty premature. It hasn’t even sunk in that you’re actually a Mr or Mrs. Someone yet. You’re still in the bubble of, “Oh My Gaaad! I just got married, legally. What do I do now?” Let’s start with changing names on social media (I mean, you start with the less tedious platforms, then along the way proceed to those that need some protocols), sharing a few pictures here and there as you also catch up on what happened on your big day because it was a daze, organizing the house, figuring out a meal plan, unwrapping your gifts, syncing your calendars (we’re family … cue that Sister Sledge song), starting to tick your relationship status as “Married” on documents or profiles and so much more.

As you do these things that might seem insignificant, but are actually great strides in this new union, the reality of things start checking in. Now you can better express your few views on married life to anyone who asks, as you’re in the thick of things. And it will still always be beautiful, amazing and all those spectacular things, because what you confess, you will possess, and the rest is pretty much private… ha ha.
