‘Tis The Last Friday of 2016.

Thank God It’s Friday!!! What are you up today? I’m at work. Le sigh. But for the majority, it seems the holiday spirit is still hovering around now that ‘tis the last Friday of the year. I’m here just thinking how in a few days everything will suddenly change as we all hit the ground running and set our pace for the New Year. It’s amazing how our spirits are elevated and our hope is restored. It always feels like you’ve been given a chance to hit an imaginary refresh button, and I wish it were like that in real life, but we pick up where we left off. The one thing we can refresh though, is our mindset.

In the same spirit, let me share with you some 7 snippets of how I foresee my 2017. (I hope you saw what I did there) 🙂 Along with some beautiful pictures I received from a photo-shoot I had won from Kurlly Diaries hair group. Photography was done by Tafari Photography (Valerie Mwango), Make Up by Ess Kay of Ruzena Naturals and Hair by Wachu Wanjaria, Founder of Kurlly Diaries.

1. What am I generally feeling about 2017?

I am feeling excited about it, but I’m also feeling nervy about it. I feel like it’s one of those years that I can’t afford to be lax about things. Like when I say I will do something, I should see to it that I do it or at the very least ensure that I have played all my cards.

2. What’s the one-word I will live by in 2017?

Mastering. I want to master my art and master my fears. Basically be a master of myself; be aware of my capabilities. I feel like so far, I have left a lot to chance and haven’t pushed myself enough. I really can do it. That which I set my mind to.

3: A book I read in 2016, that I am likely to re-read in 2017?

The War of Art by Steven Pressfield. I did a review, and when I tell you this book spoke to my existence, it really did. It helped me see myself from a different perspective. It showed me that I still have a lot to work on, I haven’t scratched the surface yet.

4. Where I would love to visit (local and international place) in 2017 that I have never been before?

Well, I have not been to many places, it’s embarrassing! But hey, we’re going to change that pretty soon.

Locally, Lamu. Yes, I have never been to Lamu, and I’m just thinking it’s one of those beautiful places that need to be visited soon. Also, a couple of beautiful spots in the country that look heavenly. And because they say charity starts at home, I really need to hit some spots in Meru and its environs first.

Internationally, I know you’ll laugh at me when I say I’ve only been to South Africa and that was a school trip while I was in Campus. So I am quite conflicted about the places I’d want to visit. I want to go to many places. Top on the list for now Dubai, for the experience, all thanks to the ‘Visit Dubai’ ads that pop up on every YouTube video you play. Then I would like to go to Canada and the US of A to visit my good friend and my relatives. Meanwhile, my bank account needs to cooperate too.

5. One bad habit I would want to drop in 2017?

Procrastination. I do this so much, that it has become my normal. The number of times I have told myself, “I will just work on it tomorrow first thing in the morning”, “I will do ‘this and that’, at a later time/day/week.” It’s got to stop. We can’t carry this type of behavior to 2017. It’s just got to stop.

6. One thing I learnt in 2016 that I will carry on to 2017?

That everything that happens in our lives, happens for a reason, some known and some unknown to us. Both the positive and negative. With the positive, we feel so happy and progressive. With the negative, we feel awfully dejected and regressive. And it’s normal to feel like that because we’re human and so we let it take its course. But if you’re in a position to turn a negative experience into a positive one whether through our actions or words, then do it, it means everything to the person experiencing it. Be patient, be present and speak life to every situation.

“In every encounter we either give life or we drain it; there is no neutral exchange.” ~ Brennan Manning

7. Top of mind, what are my top priority things I want to do in 2017.

  • Repair, re-design and furnish our house. Just make into a warm and cozy home.
  • Be a better wife, daughter, sister and friend. Be there for these guys, and put in that extra effort to show them that they mean the world to me – each of them in their own different ways.
  • To love what I do, and do what I love. For any opportunities that the present themselves or that come my way, that will be my guiding principle.
  • To see the beauty world has to offer through travel. To experience different cultures and hear different stories and see life from different perspectives through travel, books, films, music and physical connections with people.

That’s it for now. If you would like, you can also just pick up the Q’s and just fill them up. They were random, but I think they give you a bit of structure as you figure out how you want your 2017 to be. There really is no harm in dreaming.

Now, I wish you a genuinely happy and prosperous 2017.
